Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - THE single greatest achievement of man this century...
I have long viewed carrying man from earth to the moon and bringing him safely back as THE single GREATEST achievement this century (and possible of ALL history)...and this book beautifully describes in detail man's race for the moon from the beginning stages to Apollo 17, the last manned lunar visit. What an amazing accomplishment! To think that it was all done using technology more than 30 years old is almost impossible to believe. My digital watch is MORE sophisticated than the (at the time) state-of-the-art on-board computer used to land on the moon. This is just what our country needs today: something for us to root for, with heroes and those willing to risk their lives (and in some cases die) for a cause they felt was worth the risk. We have so little of that these days, and this amazing saga brought it all back in vivid detail. The tragedy of Apollo 1 on the launch pad, the incredible triumph of landing at the Sea of Tranquility in 1969, to the odd and humorous Alan Shepherd hitting a golf ball on the surface of the moon, this book chronicles a truly inspiring time in our nations history. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the moon race and anyone who loves the drama of real-life struggles with sometimes tragic consequences. Just a fantastic adventure, one that rivals ANYTHING in fiction, and that makes it even more impressive because it ACTUALLY happened.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Run right out and buy this - I'll wait
I've read a bunch of space exploration books written by astronauts, technical personnel, historians, etc. I've seen all the movies, good and bad, but this is the place to start. Mr. Chaikin has done such incredible research into the American space program (Mercury - Apollo), that he even makes chapters on lunar geology interesting. No mean feat, that. Even were I not an admitted space geek, this book would be terrific. There are insights into the personalities of those involved that I have not seen elsewhere, especially not in some of the more self-serving astronaut autobios. The level of detail is stunning, but not overwhelming, and the great achievement of this book is to point out just how hair-raisingly difficult the whole thing was. Edge of your seat reading. I could go on and on, but I see that I already have. Go buy this book. Now.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The Difinitive Work On The Apollo Era
I'll economize on words here: if you are interested in the Apollo era, GET THIS BOOK. You will not be disappointed.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - From the page to your mind!
If you liked the HBO series "From The Earth To The Moon", you must read this book. Such a detailed account of the astronauts and the missions does not exist else where. Each mission is described separately, in great prose. A must buy for all serious space readers.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Entertaining and informative.
The author takes a personal approach to each of the missions to the moon. He gets interviews and digs up interesting facts about how the crews were selected, the training they had to go through, the effects it had on their families, and what it was like on the missions itself. Entertaining, informative, never boring, and it leaves you with more respect for these men than you already had.
