hot shot golf, for those who are not familiar with the series, takes an anime-comical approach towards the players. i much prefer that to something like Tiger Woods which is too serious and you end up w/ strangely dead but, more realistic players. (guess that's a comment on all sports that try to be Real.)
i have to agree with the other reviews regarding a lack of extras and courses. it is fun, but i wish it came with more courses and characters.
i actually like the Advanced shot method (which some other reviewers have panned). you click x, when the back swing reaches to a point of power you like, you hit x; then a small reticule closes in to the ball and you click as near on the ball as possible. it takes timing, but it didn't take me long to get the hang of it. even adding the spin on it isn't so bad.
someone noted it doesn't give you the wind information on your first shot. you need to drop some grass to gauge it (although the arrow does give you some hint on how strong it is).
i wouldn't pay more than [...] for this game especially if they "offer" more courses for download.

Probably the most interesting part of this game is the online experience. Playing in tournaments with up to 50 people is a lot of fun and you can win unique prizes too. The gameplay is basically perfect but the biggest downside i have found is that you are only on the servers with other Americans and Europeans, and from what ive heard the game is really popular in Japan. So it boils down to somtimes youll be online in the lobby and there will only be about 20 people. With something like 10 floors and 10 lobbies and 50 people per room there is the potential to interact with 5000 people but in reality there are never more than 70 people IN THE WORLD on at one time. if they could do a better job of getting more people together or if the popularity somehow took off then i'd give it a 5/5

This game is pretty fun, I had HSG3 and FORE for the PS2 and I had a good amount of fun playing those game. I also purchased the HS Open Tee 1&2 for the PSP system and those games were really fun as well. I think this game is pretty good, but I don't think it's better than any of it's predecesors.
Actually the game is like the other one's to me, I just consider it a new installment of the series.
Don't get me wrong, I love this game b/c it's fun and it's not hard to get the hang of. I think they're all linear games but it's cool. One thing I don't like is that you cannot change out tops and pants for the characters. One other thing I'd like to see would maybe that an African-American character or two since we play golf also.
No hard feelings, the game is great, I'd recommend it to anyone that likes golf or just wants to have fun!

The cover art makes this game look like it will be a poor cartoony golf game, it completely fooled me and thats why I waited to buy it. The gameplay is rock solid, physics of the ball rolling over the hilly landscape give you the feeling you'r really playing, when you putt arrows on the terrain show you the dirrection and speed of the slope. The scenery and graphics in general really are amazing and don't get enough credit, it is very polished and pleasing to the eye, you feel relaxed the whole time. There is an advanced shots feature instead of the usualy bar on the bottom, this adds alot to the gameplay.
The music and sound effects are clear and also give you a relaxed feeling, I played tiger woods and honestly if you want a realistic golf game hot shots is the one to get, I know that sounds strange but it's all too true, tiger woods lets you cheat moving the ball mid air and doesn't give you that relaxed golf feeling.
A game in general should be fun and when it all comes down to it I could play this one all day without getting bored, that alone makes it worthy of a purchase.
9.6/10 from me because it could have more maps, but keep in mind there is downloadable content and they will continue to support this game via the playstation network.
