Every moody chord of every track of DEXTER emotes the often dark and always rich tone of this outstandingly well-produced series. Put yourself in Dexter's shoes for an hour of exceptional background music (with the excpetion of Any Williams' Born Free track). With more than a little resemblance to the BATMAN 2 soundtrack (remember all of those strings for Catwoman's slinky moves?) and a bit of Tim Burton as well, just, well, more grown up. Did I do a Google on the composers? you bet, and found a rich history of other work that looks worthy of checking out.
It seems less-than-Jake to just call this a soundtrack as much as an iconic album: for a subculture of soundtrack freaks, here's a killer album (good pun). For casual listeners, here's a jazzy aural dose of Dex between episodes and seasons. Artistically, I'd rack it alongside A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS as a stand-alone album. eerie Indian strains weave through classic movie adventure/horror passages: more Trans Siberian Orchestra than tv tunery. A perfect companion for pulling up a great book on a winter's night. It sounds as great on my office boom box as it does on a bigger system: nice bass; rich flavor. This is the art of soundtracking that is 100% perfect.
A few quotes from Dexter's first season make it warmly creepy, and for me, a guy who listens in the car while on those dark, long drives, this is wonderful, wonderful mood music, from Miami's latin sound through incidental pieces.
I'll admit to quickly downloading several tracks from iTunes: if you hate rap as much as I do, skip at least one track: an itunes exclusive rap bit that sounds like a 30 ROCK Tracy Morgan parody... of inane rap. But wished they'd have included these on the CD, GRRRRRRRRRR.

The music from Dexter is such an integral part of the show and the soundtrack gives you everything. I started to get worried when I heard someone rapping over the main theme but after a few listens it's actually really well done. If you are a fan of the show you know you have to own this.
