Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - One of the Worlds BEST Guitarists
Sound and picture quality are not great, but the lengthy and frequent soloing by Mr.Blackmore is a combination of melodic tact and balls out fret burning.Rainbow delivers some of their best material, all before their foray into 80's pop-metal.
The band is tight. I never liked Dio so much as a vocalist but I can understand Blackmore's appreciation of his range and soul. Late, great Cozy Powell controls the skins like few drummers can.
I wished they opted for an instrumental "Still I'm Sad" here, as their recording was. A better video transfer job (audio was OK) and few Deep Purple cuts may have pushed this to a 5th star.
But from what I hear, Blackmore was even more fiercely independent and perfectionist in those days and wanted to do it all his own way. Catch the 1974 California Jam video also!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Exceptional vintage Rainbow
A great performance captured from the Ronnie James Dio era of Rainbow, and a must have for any avid Rainbow fan. Great picture and sound quality DVD.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - kickin' live set from the Dio days.
This show is, for the most part, really energetic and really great. Comparing this to the Dusseldorf 1976 recording, these are the main differences I can hear:

1) Kill the King is WAY more aggressive here. Faster, louder, heavier, and Dio's vocals sound better.
2) Ritchie's soloing is more inspired here. Mistreated benefits greatly from this, and even his diddling around before 16th Century Greensleeves and Catch the Rainbow gets the audience clapping along.
3) Catch the Rainbow is a little too up-and-down, though this may be partially because it's 17 and a half minutes. After the verses are out of the way, the band seems to go through cycles of catching fire and really sounding great for a few minutes and then suddenly sounding lost for a bit.
4) Long Live Rock 'n' Roll has replaced Stargazer. Don't get me wrong, it sounds great and Dio really gets the crowd into it, but still...would it have killed them to have put Stargazer in and trimmed down Still I'm Sad (which goes over 25 minutes) and/or the encore of Do You Close Your Eyes (almost 10 minutes)?
5) Still I'm Sad suffers from the same affliction that Catch the Rainbow does: it's a bit too long for its own good. Again, the band wanders in some places. Cozy's 1812 Overture drum solo is excellent.

I also own the Munich DVD and there are a few things to note. First, Dio's chatter with the audience is almost completely edited out, as is the introductory clip from "Wizard of Oz" with the "over the rainbow..." thing. Personally, I like to hear that kind of stuff. Maybe it wasn't feasible to have that and still keep the show in proper running order on 2 CDs. Whatever. Also, when Dio comes in very faintly on Do You Close Your Eyes (I think it's the first verse), it's not because the mic cuts out. It's because he sings into Bob Daisley's mic instead of his! Watch on the DVD and you'll see him with a "what the hell?" look before he realizes what's going on and gets his mic back.

All in all, this is a good release that no Dio or Rainbow fan should be without...and if you're a Deep Purple fan with no exposure to Rainbow, you should check it out as well.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - allright could have been great
To long on the solos,Made it kind of boring,Could have picked a few different songs.Dio and Co. were right on and killer that night.Ritchie was great, but like I said he was a little boring and selfesh with those long solos.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Totally Thrilled to Get this
Its an amazing rush to get this disc with so many bonus extras... On top of the almost 2 hours of concert, there are great interviews, Some Video Clips, and some fairly insightful Commentary. It would have been nice to get Ronnie to comment on the Concert, but thats hoping too much.
I first saw this is in a pristine Bootleg, with great stereo sound... the only difference is that there is a lengthy wait period at the start of the Bootleg, and time at the end.
There is not too much wrong with the Video expecially since it is a TV shot, and a PRO shot at that with no Fancy FX that some Video clip directors get into. Anyway, the ramp up of the audio is the biggest Bonus on this, since Ritchies Guitar sound is great, as is Cozy's drumming.
For anyone who has the Bootleg, it is well worth upgrading to this single disc version of all the items.
Also, no one seems to have mentioned that you get a reproduction of the Tour programme in the Disc. All this for like 10 dollars?? Wow, its a well worth it !!! I only wish there was more of DEEP PURPLE around of this quality.
ENJOY
