Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Not a classic, but worthy of a look-see!
Legendary director John Ford's last film, while not as good as earlier efforts, does possess some striking photography, a brilliant Alex North score, and good acting. Stalwart Richard Widmark does well as the cavalryman with a conscious; Karl Malden is fine as the duty-bound fort commander; and Edward G. Robinson does his patented perfection as a politician who tries to placate the situation. Even the politically incorrect casting of non-Indians Ricardo Montalban, Delores Del Rio, Sal Mineo, and Gilbert Roland can be excused as a sign of the film making times. Veteran character actor Sean McClory is also quite memorable as the fort doctor who confronts Captain Malden about the mistreatment of the Indian prisoners.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Very Uneven Western
I was ultimately disappointed by this tale of the American mistreatment of the Cheyenne Indians in the years following the Civil War. Despite an incredible all star cast, beautiful photography, and a great score, this film failed to involve me as I watched it. I think the problem lies with the script. Very few characters are fleshed out, there are too many to concentrate on, and the story jumps around. The Jimmy Stewart / Arthur Kennedy sequence as Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday is a lot of fun, but very unnecesarry to the film. Perhaps a more streamlined approach would have helped to focus the story more. In any event, the film has some beautiful moments and fans of Westerns or John Ford will probably want to see this one, but I suspect many people will be left unsatisfied by the end.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - read the book
This movie is (loosely) based on the non-fiction book of the same name. Someone unfortunately chose to add in characters who were not involved in the real story, from Wyatt Earp to the Quaker school marm, since there were otherwise too few white people that the audience could sympathize with.

It is unfortunate, because this could otherwise have been a much more powerful movie. As is, the story is flawed by Ford's adherence to Western movie formula.

Not bad, but it could have been so much better. Someone please do a remake.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A moving account of the American Indians.
John Ford was once accused of killing more Indians than the US Cavalry.

True Ford fans know Ford *always* respected the Native American in his films. His films did not take the "savage" approach to the American Indian, but always treated the tribes as the professional light cavalry that they were.

Still, in this movie, Cheyenne Autumn, he dramatically shows the plight of the Native Americans, and the two-faced and uncaring U.S. Government. This story is the epic tale of the remaining Cheyenne warriors, driven from their homes into a reservation far from where they belonged, and then ignored by a government who consigned them to poverty and betrayal.

Beautifully photographed, as all John Ford movies were, this is a different sort of Western, but one that is nevertheless well worth watching. It stars some non-Indian "stars" in some Indian
parts, but it dramatically addresses the plight of the American Indian tribes. As in most Ford westerns, Navajo tribespeople stood in for their Cheyenne brothers.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Not so hot
This movie is not so hot. It's way too long, for one thing. They just waste a lot of time. If it had been an hour long, it might have been pretty good. They stuck Jimmy Stewart in for a half hour that had nothing to do with the movie, he wasn't a very cool character like he usually is, and it was just [dumb]. I'll say one thing for it, though: the music was beautiful.
