At the recommendation of the excellent British motorcycle publication Bike, I picked up a copy of this game. Which also required the acquisition of a playstation 2. One $50 ebay auction later, and I was playing. Let me preface this review by saying that I haven't had a video game system since the original Nintendo when I was a kid. Man, have video games come a long way since Super Mario Brothers!
All I can say about Tourist Trophy is that it is spectacular! This game was developed by the same folks who put out the Gran Turismo series, and the considerable amount of time they've clearly spent developing this game really shows through.
First, the game is unlike Moto racing games of the past. This game includes dozens of real street bikes - from the most current race replicas, to historically significant models from the past. The bikes are reproduced in intricate detail, they look EXACTLY like the real street bikes. Whatever your favorite sportbike, it's in here. Hayabusas, Gixxer 6,750,1000's, CBR's, Ninja's, Ducati's, MV Agusta's, there's even BMW's for those weird BMW people. There's also equipment, Dainese racing suits, Arai helmets, Sidi boots!
They've got well known international tracks, Suzuka, Laguna Seca, Indianapolis, etc., tons of races, skills practicing, instant replays (so cool), and you can even print out a picture!
The controls take a little getting used to, but I've only put in about 4 hours on the game, and I've already won all the 600 bikes from the big 4, and the Gix 750. If you ride, you'll pick up the feedback and handling properties very quickly - they're about as accurate as you're likely to find on a motorcycle simulator anywhere.
All non-riders should be aware that this game has been designed for maximum reality and the bikes in it will behave as they would on the street or track, not as might be expected from a video game. If you blow your line, and come in to a turn with too much speed, you'll end up in the grass - just like in real life.
This game is perfect for the sportbike fanatic. Even non video game playing bikers will love it. Perfect for the colder months of the off season, and for those who are on a first name basis with the traffic court clerk.

Like a lot of people, I first heard that this game had a steep learning curve that led to many a crash until you got the hang of it and for the first day or two I was kinda frustrated with it until I "unlearned" some bad habits from other racing games. With most of the MotoGP games (which I did really like) you can just hustle in a corner on full throttle, bang the bike down on it's side with both brakes at full lock and out brake everybody. While it's fun and all try that on a real bike and prepare to eat gravel. TT requires you to actually think about corner entry speed and lean angle in addition to the track layout, much like a real bike. I love this game!! Even though it's a couple of years old now I still pop it in to get my virtual racing fix :)
Good:
- Bike details are great (look, sounds, feel, etc.)
- Good replay value in Arcade or TT modes
- Forces you to think and not just mash buttons
Bad:
- Could be more/better choices of bikes. This is really hard to claim as a fault because you could ask 100 people what bikes "should" be in the game and get 100 totally diferent lists. The choices they do have are good and varied but like anyone else there are some I wish were there.
- Some physics are kinda curious such as this: When braking to a corner if you shift ANY weight forward prepare to be launched over the handlebars in a wicked endo. Loading the front with a weight shift is one of the keys to good stopping power and it sucks to be penalized for trying to utilize it. Also, you should never be able to give a 100+ hp bike full throttle at max lean and just glide away. Those must be the stickiest tires ever made!....lol. These are minor gripes from someone that actually rides but they don't take any fun away from the game in my opinion.
Overall this game is fantastic and I highly recommend it to anyone. It's not a arcade game that will let you get away with murder but it's not so tedious that it takes the fun away. I was hoping that there would be a TT2 but it seems not to be at the latest Grand Tourismo game is supposed to have bikes. That really blows since I was hoping for a full sequel but we'll see.

I had no doubt Polyphony Digital could create another great race game, even one with half the wheels of the others. But "Gran Turismo with bikes" this game really isn't. While there are many varying bikes to collect, you never get the sense you own your machine and can customize it how you choose. You don't actually buy bikes in TT, you win the right to use them by winning short challenges. Most of the challenges are stupidly easy; others are devilishly hard. The actual races aren't that much more exciting. Much like Gran Turismo, the opponents are robotic in their technique, making many races boring parades that aren't especially difficult to win. A rare crash will cost you hardly any time at all. What Tourist Trophy does right are its bikes, which all feel and sound different from one another. The scooters are surprisingly fun, the big 1000cc monsters can be unwieldy, and the 125cc-250cc bikes are just right. The graphics also hold up well, even as we're a couple of years into the new generation of hardware. I hope Tourist Trophy has life as a series on the PS3; it seems like one of those games that will be great in its sequel(s), if it's lucky enough to get that far. If you're into motorcycle racing games, you know that quantity has taken over quality on store shelves the past few years. Tourist Trophy's variety of rides and familiar tracks make it a worthy choice. Just don't expect quite the refinement of the Gran Turismo series.

the folks behind Gran Tourismo really got the motorcycle genre right in this one. It's a challenging trip through lots of modern and a few classic bikes from all the major japanese manufacturers and a few european ones. some fairly significant models seem to be missing, but there are some fascinating choices for what they did include. great graphics, great play engine, good 2-player mode, lots of good tracks.

Being right-handed, I wish the option to steer with the right analog stick and throttle/brake with the left analog stick was available. Alas, it's not. Yes, I'm well aware the throttle is on the right in the real world. Even so, I'd gladly trade a more realistic controller layout for greater steering precision.
