I've played Catan for a long time. About four years ago I got the Cities and Knights expansion, and I've never looked back. But I rarely found more than three other friends in a night who wanted to play.
The downside to that? I really liked the green and brown teams. They just added a more diverse choice for players, even if there were only three of four playing the game. And the four basic colors were getting stale.
That's when I learned that Catan was being republished in a horrible fashion; all the pieces were going to be plastic!
And to make matters worse, my local shops were no longer carrying the wooden editions nor expansions. I tried for months to locate a vendor for the 3rd edition, expansion. It seemed I could find the basic game's expansion, but not the 5-6 player one. And the one place that claimed they had one, failed to have one when I placed my order. It's nice to see that Amazon still carries some.
I really do enjoy playing the Cities and Knights expansion. It adds more options to the game than if you were to play the basic version, though it also adds more time. ~_^ And now I have my green and brown sets to play along side. The only downside? The expansion pieces are a slightly different color than the original pieces. But hey, now a fifth friend doesn't have to sit around watching anymore!

great game- we call it "THE GAME" it has called us away from the computer, it essentially done away with the tube- we play together- it is hard for me- a double masters and easy for matt- 21 and smart as heck- but it is always a challenge; every game is a new game!

When trying to explain this game to anyone, it always sounds boring. That is, until you play it. We never set it up like the rules say which makes it super fun... and if you get rid of the pillager and just ignore the black ship roll but include everything else that has to do with cities and knights, you will love the game even more.
This game is addictive - we've been known to play from lunch till 4am. Oh, and don't be too nasty when you play or it's guaranteed to make you want to fight with the other players (which sometimes leads to a better game, and sometimes not).
Whenever we introduce this game to anyone, they too want to buy it. It's a must have for any real gamer.

The expansion is very appropriate since it allows more players to share the fun. Such a great game...

This expansion is probably not for everyone, but we absolutely love it. In fact, everyone I've played it with has agreed that the base game lacks luster once this expansion has been tried.
The primary additions are:
* Players must jointly repel raiding barbarians from time to time or the weakest (in terms of defending knights) loses a city. The player contributing the most knights is "Defender of Catan" and gets a victory point.
* The game is played to 13 instead of 10, so it takes a bit longer.
* Cities can now be developed, which leads to additional capabilities, play of a new sort of card (similar to development cards) and even receive 4VP instead of just two.
* City walls allow you to hold more cards in your hand.
Development cards are no longer used.
I wouldn't try this expansion without a working facility with Settlers, but if the base game starts to lose luster, I heartily recommend this expansion. The only caveat I would add is that it does not "expand" the game so much as it really takes it to a totally different level. Be aware also that it will increase the amount of direct conflict in the game somewhat.
