My 8 year old grandson is interested in the Universe and wanted "the planets". He was overjoyed with this gift and so was his father who helped put it together. It didn't require overhauling the overhead light. It is a great educational toy.

I used the light in the middle of my daughter's room as the "sun". I then spiraled the planets around the sun. Mercury is just beyond the reach of the ceiling fan; then each planet was just a little further away than the previous one. I put the first four planets fairly close together (as they are supposed to be), then put a bigger gap between the rest, and it worked out with Neptune being the furthest away, almost to the wall. We put up Pluto too, but sometimes Pluto is closer to the sun than Neptune, so it works out.
It was time consuming to put up, but I had no problem getting the tacks to stay in the ceiling. As far as durability goes, it's been in her room for several years now... we've never had a problem. No tacks have ever fallen out.
Yes, the stars are cheap and not worth it. They do sell just the planets for half the price, but it says you only get putty... I like the tacks. Some of the planets glow brighter than others, depending on the color.
My daughter (now 9) absolutely loves it, and it's not some cutesy thing that she's going to outgrow. My 6 year old wants them in her room now too. I like that they are on the ceiling, versus a standing mobile that's in my way.

These planets are sized to scale and accurately colorful. They come with brief great info on each planet, and tell you their relative distance from the sun if you want to hang them as a realistic representation of the solar system. They don't come with a sun, although if it would be in keeping with the other accurate sizing of the planets enclosed, it would require a much larger box, ha.

My 7 year old loved it and loves watching them every night. A lot of people had mentioned that it was hard to tack them up. But in all fairness they do provide the thread and tacks. It took me 15-20 mins to have them up. They indeed looked beautiful at night. I am giving it a 4 only because the "sun" is missing in the whole system . I had to make a dummy one myself and also I found it very expensive for what they are providing (9 Plastic glow in the dark balls :-) for $20 ). The stickers in there are very tiny. Had to buy a separate pack with bigger stars.

I was a little disappointed w/the stars. You get a sheet of stickers that look like you could've gotten them at a craft store for $3. They aren't like the raised stars you probably have seen before but they do the trick in my son's room. He really likes them. The planets are flimsy but do the trick as well. If i were to do it over again, i would probably buy the planets separately and order the better quality stars.
