Yes, sure it has some real weird moments and the guys making it were probably so stoned it made sense. But if you are a real hendrix fan you will want to watch it and you will watch it more than once. Plus its a story about the rainbow bridge group of people and is done in retrospect of their lives and their beliefs, so the film is really art and its critique is of course an expression just like the movie is for the director.
Here is an example, If you like the red hot chili peppers you will buy "suberbia" with flea in it, the movie is not all that great but you see a young flea acting out a script.

The first time I watched this movie, I almost hurt myself laughing. This is possibley the worst hippie movie EVER made. However, the second Jimi hits the stage, you will hear possibley the best version of (Hey Baby) Land of the new rising sun ever caught on record. Foxy lady is just screaming, and Voodoo Chile (slight return) has moments unique to this performance. His playing is pure energy and spirit unmatched by any other electric guitarist EVER. You can tell Jimi is blasted, as he stumbles over words, but WOW. Jimi Hendrix at his best plugs into SOMETHING wonderful, and during this short concert footage, he is plugged into something incredible. Pure energy through sound. The movie gets -5 stars, and Jimi's performance is priceless.

It would be tempting to give this---ahem---"movie" a lower rating, but I just can't: it is so valuable for the great Jimi Hendrix set near the end, as well as the alchol and/ or drug-induced interview segments (which one writer says Hendrix appears more bombed than London during WWII!!!!!). In addition, the movie IS a real time capsule of the time and is 'interesting' on other levels. Get this.

Honestly, I've never written a review for amazon.com, but I had to say something about this. I've read a few reviews saying that for a "real" Hendrix fan, this DVD is a must-have. Those people obvioulsy don't know anything about Jimi and the actual circumstances surrounding the making of this film.
First of all, Jimi did not want to have any part in this film, and it was only after Michael Jeffery (Jimi's evil-to-the-core manager for those who don't know or just claim to be Hendrix fans) had sunk tens of thousands of his own dollars into it, only to come out empty-handed, that he forced Jimi to make that god awful performance on the top of that volcano.
This brings me to the much discussed Jimi performance at the end of this film. Let me give you the real facts about it. Aside from a brilliant medley of "Hey Baby" and "In From the Storm", little usable material was actually captured on tape, and technical problems completely disrupted the recording of Mitch Mitchell's drums save for a single overhead microphone (the entire drums track was later re-recorded at Electric Lady Studios). There are other details regarding the performace, and subsequent injection of material into the movie, but suffice it to say it was an unmitigated disaster, especially in comparision to some of the other live performanced Jimi gave around that time such as at Berkeley in May of 1970.
The point of all this is that Chuck Wein was simply interested in doing drugs and making a film with "good vibrations" as he would say. He was involved in a drug trafficking ring of surfers who would smuggle dope in inside their surfboards, which is why the film was shot in Maui, 'nuff said. Jimi was forced into performing (also his "speaking part" in the film was coerced and he was completely wasted at the time it was given) by Michael Jeffery. Jimi himself stated that he hated that performance. If you like Jimi Hendrix at all, NEVER BUY OR WATCH THIS FILM. It is an insult to his already fragile and tainted legacy. If it could give it a "0" rating, I would.

This movie is a piece of crap from beginning to about 20 - 25min away from the end. The scenes, characterization and script/dialogue are just complete nonsense. I can't follow the movie. I just don't get it. Thank god these creeps don't run world because... man we would be in a pile s___ right now.. hey.. maybe they do. ???
And then there's Jimi. Jimi, unfortunately, was caught on tape saying something..who knows what.. but his guitar was the message. There are snippets of electric guitar phrasing and technique here that are unrivalled anywhere by anyone in the last 50 years. Apart from classic guitar interpretation of the classics, Jimi translates magic through the stratocaster, which tingles the spine, and is virtually unreplicable. Somehow he pierces through discordant chord combinations and crafts sounds and melody, are frankly haunting...............
