This book is brilliant. It includes both illustrations and photographs which, in my opinion, are both essential to the comprehension of the techniques. The illustrations are incredibly clear to guide you through the techniques while the photographs show you what the results should actually look like. The language is clear and the book is masterfully organized from beginning to end. This book covers everything - basic techniques, color knitting, finishing techniques, designing, everything! It also includes a wonderful stitch dictionary which includes written patterns, charts, and photographs for each stitch. My knitting has vastly improved already along with my understanding of it's construction. This book is an essential for every knitter's library. Truly a masterpiece. Now if they would just do one of these books for crochet too! :D

As a novice knitter, this has been a wonderful reference tool for me. I rely on this book and Maran Illustrated Knitting and Crocheting. The depth and range of the topics in The Ultimate Knitting Book will address all of your questions - beginner to advanced. However as a visual learner, I prefer the visuals in the Maran Illustrated Knitting and Crocheting.

This is the ultimate knitting book. I am a fairly advanced knitter, and this book helped me get there- I can make beautiful invisible seams now, which makes a sweater look 'handmade' instead of 'homemade', if you get what I mean! Finishing techniques are what makes an item look sleek and beautiful, and this book is the place to learn those techniques.

Lots of information here, but it really needs a better index.
I bought this book on a recommendation from my local yarn shop because I was a new knitter. I couldn't for the life of me find some techniques listed because they were under a different name that I wasn't aware of. I now know that some basic stitches and techniques have more then one COMMON name.
Some of the techniques that are basic should have better, step by step pictures also (psso for instance). People refer to this as the knitting bible or the "book to have for new knitters" but it's not very helpful for new people.

I am currently enrolled in the TKGA (The Knitting Guild Association)Master Hand Knitting Program. This is a three level course in which you as a student provide samples of different knitting techniques, as well as written reports on different subjects involving the fine art of knitting. Even though I have been knitting for over 45 years, there were many questions I needed answered.
This book was mentioned on a Yahoo Group specifically formed to answer questions for student of the program, such as myself. I have found that "Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Knitting Book" is the ultimate choice. It almost seems like the master's knitting program was written around this book.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who has entered the TKGA Master Knitting Program or to anyone who is interested in anything involving this fine art form.
Hopefully, I will complete this master knitting program soon. I am a co-owner of a small company in the Illinois area who provides instruction in knitting. We emphasis on teaching all ages to knit, mostly at local libraries. We are called: "Have Yarn - Will Travel".
