A nice book with basic instructions on cast on, bind off, increase, decrease, etc. The patterns are not so great, you can find nicer ones in other books (Barbara Walker's, for instance). Not much about finishings... Might be a disappointment for experienced knitter.

I guess no instruction book does it all but I had hoped this would be the one. It is not. As I venture into more ambitious knitting I find the need for different cast on/cast off (bind off) directions. They ain't here. This is pretty much the basics with a few variations. The illustrations are good. However I think I just found a typo that confounds my finishing in a three-needle binding off. (They call it "binding off two pieces together.") And, why bother to give a few dowdy "traditional" patterns? A stitch dictionary? Already have one, or two. Do you still use four double-pointed needles? I use five as do most knitters I know. This book needs to update to the way people knit today. Not a single word about knitting socks. Not the ultimate knitting book!

This book is the back bone of my knitting library. I have at least 20 knitting books and no matter what I am knitting I seem to pull this one out to reference. It has the most complete basic information and the illustration are clear and helpful.

This book provides an excellent, well written resources for knitting. A must have for the shelf.

A book for all level knitters. Explains stitches, finishings and other details. The photos and illustrations are excellent and very helpful.
