Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - No Subjugation, Clears Away Confusion
Reading this book helped me understand the natural way in which I was created and how I fit into my work world, which is 95% male. In eloquence, the book helped me understand that I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalms 139:14) and that all men and women are created after the image of God (Gen 1:27). Through scripture the book proves that both sexes share an equal inheritance in the gift of life. However, that does not mean God does not have a distinct purpose for manhood and a distinct purpose for womanhood. There is no subjugation of women here. Instead, confusion is dimmed as definitions of manhood and womanhood are made clear in the light of Truth (the Bible), and a veil of ignorance is lifted, revealing how the important state of maturity -manhood and womanhood- fit into God's purposes.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Very disappointing.
I found it to lean very heavily towards a hierarchal view of the relationship between men and women. Men are to rule, and women are to submit to that rule. The authors appear to see women as perpetual children who need to be under the continual domination of men, rather than as adults who deal with men on an adult level. I suggest anyone who reads this books should also read "Discovering Biblical Equality." It gives another view of how the Christians world see the role of women.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Essential reading
Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood: A Response to Evangelical Feminism (Edited By John Piper and Wayne Grudem) is essential reading to help you form your own position in what may be one of the most important debates in the church at the current time- how to respond to feminism.

What I like about the book is it doesnt simply assume that a 1950s view is correct. Instead, examining from all kinds of angles the book attempts to do what it says on the tin. Preaching a view that says women and men are complementary to each other the book is the best yet to aim to construct a biblical view of this thorny issue.

You may not agree with everything you read here, but you must hear these arguments and respond to them if you aim to be true to the bible in your view of the role of men and women. Honest christians may well disagree on this subject, but the rabid femminism described so ably in "The feminist Mistake" will take no prisoners and we must construct a robust philosophy on this issue that will stand.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Responsible for turning me away from God, the Bible and the church
This book made me cry. What I don't understand is if we are created equal in the eyes of God, why aren't we equal in the eyes of man? Equal but different, I'm okay with but to say that a woman cannot lead and then to create a list of acceptable professions in which she may work? That's not equal. That is subjegation. If God intends women to be the subject of her husband or male domination /leadership in general - regardless of how "godly" her husband / man is to treat her, that is not equality. How can you be equal in the eyes of God but not equal in the world? That would mean God is deviant, sexist, misogynistic and repulsive - A God that I no longer want anything to do with. I'm not amazed at the overwhelmingly positive reponses from men who feel their patriarchal legacy threatened by women. What does surprise me is the amount of women who buy into this.

I will not worship a God that does not make women an equal in this world. I think that men and women both bring equal value to the world and are neither subject to one another. This book made me ill. Who wants to bring children into such a horrible world where 50% of them will be told - sorry you don't have a penis so you can't do that. Horrible. Just horrible.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - A case in point of a dangerous human tendency
This book is the best proof I have found yet of the danger of defining ourselves according to social institutions and patterns given to us by the world. Claiming that God's ideal for men is for them to be protectors and providers overlooks the glaring issue that in God's ideal world, protection and provision wouldn't be needed. If the world had never fallen into sin, we would still be living in the Garden of Eden, where God had provided all we could ever need, and thus men wouldn't be "providers". There would be no sin and thus no violent tendencies; ergo, no need for protection. The fact that we live in a sinful and fallen world has required men (up to this point) to take on these sad duties, and when we overlook this fact, we become desensitized to our own depraved natures.

So this is the predicament we're in: we humans have screwed up, and now we're on our own to provide for ourselves. For thousands of years, the harsh environment required brute strength in order to reap nourishment from the earth. Men were obviously better qualified to attend to this need. Today, however, brains matter much more than brawn, and so women are on an equal playing field with men when it comes to taking on the need for provision. Trouble starts because men have defined themselves as men, not by finding their identity solely in Christ, but (at least partially) by their provider role. As this role ceased to be unique to them, men felt their identity threatened, and voila! you end up with the kind of reactionary conservatism found in this book.

Once we understand this scenario, it's hard to claim that God's ideal for manhood is a leader, protector, and provider when God's ideal world (a sinless one) required absolutely none of these things.

The proper role for Christians is to be found in one place: Christ. Men are to emulate Christ, and so are women. It's not always lady-like to be Christlike, and it's certainly not always macho or manly to be Christlike either. We must resist finding our identity in the situations and roles that our fallen, sinful world has placed us in, because if we don't, we become resistant to ameliorating the effects sin has had on us and our world. I can think of no greater tragedy.
