Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - South Beach vs. regular low calorie diet.....and the winner is..........
This is a diet book whose plan is to get you to lose weight by limiting your carbohydrates- essentially another low-carbohydrate diet. It has 3 phases where your carbohydrates are severely restricted at first, and then re-introduced. I have personally read three controlled trials comparing low carb diets to your regular calorie restricted diets that were published in scientific journals. The results? Low carb diets produce more weight loss during the first 6 months, but at one year follow-up, both groups had lost THE SAME amount of weight. Therefore, it really doesn't matter which diet plan you choose, the South Beach diet or your standard low calorie diet, because if you can stay on either of them for a year, you'll lose the same amount of weight. To that end, then, the South Beach diet is a fairly healthy diet plan and a good one to choose from, but the bottom line if you want to lose weight is to cut your calories with ANY diet plan and absolutely stick with it and make it a part of your lifestyle. Readers who like this book might also be interested in The South Beach Diet Cookbook as well. Good luck!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A New Way of Eating Healthy
I love this book. It isn't the book; it is what is teaches you about a healthier way of eating. It isn't all about diet; it is about a lifestyle which will undoubtedly lead to weight loss. After a year, I still watch what I eat. Yes, I eat ice cream and all the fun things; but in a more healthier way. Do I ever go outside of what South Beach recommends; yes--but not daily. I don't think it is about imprisoning yourself but about knowledge and guidelines to a healthier eating style. I like it and it definitely has improved my eating style and my weight. The great thing is my weight hasn't increased. I highly recommend South Beach. Today, I use wisdom and incorporate the concept of South Beach into my food purchase AND WHAT I EAT. You don't have to use all the meals in the book; it is just a way to get you on the path of eating right. Consider it a guide--BE creative and just understand the methodology behind South Beach. Make Sense-be smart and EAT BETTER--EAT HEATHIER!!!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - It works.
I have used this book and have lost pounds more successfully with this than any other diet.

The main issue is the loss of bread and crunch. This can be successfully balanced out with low carb breads, which are getting a bit harder to find, but can still be located in large supermarkets and some health food stores.

Crunch is a bit more difficult, but if you can learn to have a loving relationship with celery and carrots, you'll make it.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Book For My Father Inlaw
I bought this book for my father inlaw. He really finds it useful. I haven't looked at it myself, but it seems to be a good referance book to have.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I love this diet!
As someone who had never dieted before and therefore used exercise as my only means of weight loss/ maintenance, I got a lot out of this book. My advice to those who are planning to start the South Beach Diet is to read the whole book rather than simply the lists of allowed/ banned foods. Doing so will make you understand WHY you need to give up certain foods and increase your consumption of others.

While I really didn't miss the pasta and bread, some friends felt weak at the start of South Beach because they were so used to consuming carbs. How difficult this diet will be for you depends in great part on how good your eating habits are prior to starting it. During Phase 1, I mainly miss eating full-fat cheese and drinking wine. I'm not a big dessert eater, but if you are, there are dessert recipes included for all phases to offset any cravings for cookies or cake. One caveat about the no-carb phase: You might not feel up to your normal level of aerobic exercise.

Aside from bread, pasta, and sweets, you can basically eat normal meals. Red meat is fine, as are poultry and seafood. Just stick to leaner cuts of meat and don't use sauces with added sugar. I find that eating vegetable sides is actually more satisfying than mashed potatoes or rice, and I don't feel as tired/ bloated afterward.

About going out to dinner: I live in the city and frequently eat out with friends. It is pretty rare that I can't find something South-Beach-friendly on a menu. Most restaurants have at least one item that involves low-fat seafood, poultry, or beef and a vegetable side. Many places, whether you're in a big city or a small town, can substitute a veggie side in (even if it's for a small additional fee). National chains like Applebee's and TGIFriday's generally include a healthy section on their menus as well.

The biggest adjustment is that you will have to plan your meals, especially during the week (if you work). For me, that means boiling a couple of eggs so they'll be ready in time for me to bring them to work for a healthy breakfast at my desk. It's important to have staples like unsalted nuts, low-fat deli meat and cheese, and salad greens in your fridge so you can easily pack a lunch and two snacks -- one for the morning, one for the afternoon.

Overall, I think South Beach is pretty user-friendly, as long as you're committed to developing a healthier lifestyle. I just read Skinny Bitch and believe that you could possibly even adapt this diet to a vegan/ vegetarian lifestyle if you wanted to.
