This is a great movie and it is one of my daughters favorite. I know once we get the movie it will be fine. For now. I ordered this product in July and it is not to arrive until sometime in Sept. any where from the 1st to the 28th of Sept.

That woman with the purple eyes
and ugly square-toed shoes
The one who's scratching at her scalp
is certainly bad news!
Does she look faint when kids draw near
or hold her nose and run?
If women like this roam the world
God bless us, everyone
Convention time at the hotel
we goggle at the sight
of Grand High Witch Angelica
whose wig is on too tight
Her followers cheer gleefully
as she takes off her mask
revealing all her ghastly warts
and gives them one big task
"Quit your jobs," the Chief Witch says
"and open candy shops,
free chocolate should do the trick
we'll pull out all the stops"
The witches have an evil plan
to rid the world of brats
those stinky, smelly rotten kids
will now be meals for cats
But all bad deeds must have a hitch
their plan's been overheard
a clever boy is eavesdropping
and has heard every word
Soon he's crawling through the kitchens
and dropping in the cress
too many cooks DO spoil the broth
and make an awful mess
The ending differs from the book
it's really very sappy
I'm sure Dahl's rolling in his grave
because they made it happy

PS - The sound quality on this DVD is not up to standard, and you'll need to watch it with remote in hand to make volume adjustments. There are no sub-titles or closed-captioning, and the packaging is of the cheaper variety.

It's a good kinda scary. The kinda scary story you'd tell at the campfire. There's enough scares, comical elements, and good story to merit 5 stars. Too many movies don't cater to the whole family, WITCHES, I feel does.

I loved The Witches as a child, although if I remember correctly, I wasn't so keen on the book. Strange that. I had it taped off the TV (how far we've come), and it must have been about 10 years since I last saw it, when I spotted it on DVD. I barely remembered any of it by this time, but as soon as I put it in the DVD player, I remembered it as it happened on screen. And the little girl, Erica, disappearing at the start of the film, only to appear in a painting, still gives me the chills to this day.
I was quite shocked when watching the start credits, to discover Jim Henson had a hand in this. It made me look forward to it even more, especially since it was one of the last films he had a hand in, but I was disappointed to find it wasn't that impressive. A couple of mice here & there. And obviously there was Angelica Houston's transformation from plastic surgery beauty, to haggard witch. WOW! What a transformation. I was definitely scared watching the transformation as that was the bit I didn't remember. And the rest of the witches - did anyone else think they looked a bit dodgy, because they were really men in drag?!?! Hehe. You can definitely spot it on a couple of the witches, but some of them were scarily feminine.
I haven't seen a lot of the Roald Dahl adaptations, only this, Matilda and I think that's it. Apparently, he wasn't impressed with the ending, as they changed it slightly from the book. Frankly, I would have been happy if they'd stayed with the book's ending. The ending they went for just didn't click.
Stuart Little obviously got a few ideas from this film, if you've seen both you'll really notice it. However, this is far superior to Stuart Little, since I hated that!
This is definitely the film which will make all your childhood nightmares return with a vengence, and after watching, made me feel like a child all over again. Definitely a keeper.

The movie is about a little boy Luke (Jasen Fisher) and his grandma (Mai Zetterling), who likes telling him stories about witches. They go to an English hotel, where Luke sees the Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston) telling the witches of England her cruel plan. She wants to turn all the English children into mice! Of course, Luke decides to help children. But there's one problem: the Grand High Witch turnes him into a mouse!
The movie is really very good and entertains not only children, but their parents too.
Anjelica Huston is just memorable as the Grand High Witch!! It's really one of her best roles and she received many awards for it. And by the way it took her eight hours of make up time to prepare her for her transformed role of the Grand High Witch.
Mai Zetterling is also very outstanding as grandma and Jasen Fisher as Luke. And also there's one of the greatest comics in the world - Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Stringer. Plus it's Jim Henson's last work.
