Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Morality Play
The Road (Movie Tie-in Edition) (Vintage International) is a morality play. A man and his son move along a road seeking surcease from evil. From this simple premise, McCarthy shapes an unforgettable novel that plumbs the depths of our communal soul.

I am pleased that there are men in the world like Cormac McCarthy. He understands the nature of evil and reveals it for what it is. One perceptive reviewer compared McCarthy to an Old Testament prophet, and that quality is what sets the author apart. This work is permeated by a steely morality, the like of which is seldom seen in this society. The novel is profound, terrifying, and starkly beautiful. Read it.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Yet More Lit-Horror
This is a tale of horror centering on the end of the world where the world ends not with a bang but with a whimper. In this horror story instead of ghost and zombies the characters face a cataclysmic event. These people survive and no more. Basically this is 'Blindness' with civilization yet again collapsed.'Blindness' is a little more up beat as the blindness does pass. The point of 'The Road' is that all that there is is survival and survival is pointless. This is a nihlistic work with a loving tale of a father and son to make the nihlism more palatable. Lit-Horror has swept bookworld and here is yet another example.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - It will haunt your dreams
I wish I could tell you this is a pleasant little tale. It's not. It could be, however, one of the most significant reading experiences of your life.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Recommended
I almost didn't read this book based on the many, very vehement, negative reviews. Yes, there are many more positive reviews, but often, for whatever reason, I sometimes find more can be gleaned from the negative opinions. I'm glad I eventually found this book in a second-hand shop and decided to buy it. Yes, the landscape and story line are very bleak, overall, and the writing style is different, so I can see where many people would not like this book, but I thoroughly enjoyed the whole story and was quickly immersed. I look forward to reading it again before the movie releases.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Miserable but Persistent
If you're prone to hopelessness, this may not be the book for you. If you're the sort of person who goes to the worst case scenario, deals with that, and figures that any step up from that is an improvement, you might like this book. I did.

Some people keep fighting no matter what. They can't bring themselves to give up, no matter the size of the obstacle they face. For some people, they would rather go down fighting than give up. I didn't realize I was one of those people until I read this book. It's not a pleasant read, but it's one you will never forget or regret. Go for it.
