Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
The third game in the Fallout series, Fallout 3 is a singleplayer action role-playing game (RPG) set in a post-apocalyptic Washington DC. Combining the horrific insanity of the Cold War era theory of mutually assured destruction gone terribly wrong, with the kitschy naivety of American 1950s nuclear propaganda, Fallout 3 will satisfy both players familiar with the popular first two games in its series as well as those coming to the franchise for the first time.

The Story: Vault 101 – Jewel of the Wastes
For 200 years, Vault 101 , a fallout shelter, has faithfully served the surviving residents of Washington DC and its environs, now known as the Capital Wasteland. Though the global atomic war of 2077 left the US all but destroyed, the residents of Vault 101 enjoy a life free from the constant stress of the outside world. Giant Insects, Raiders, Slavers, and yes, even Super Mutants are all no match for superior Vault-Tec engineering. Yet one fateful morning, you awake to find that your father has defied the Overseer and left the comfort and security afforded by Vault 101 for reasons unknown. Leaving the only home you've ever known, you emerge from the Vault into the harsh Wasteland sun to search for your father, and the truth.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Buy the collector's edition instead.

The one item that separates the survival edition from the collector's edition is the pipboy clock and unfortunately, this clock is a miserable piece of junk.

It is built of a substandard molded green plastic, it looks cheap and it feels cheap. Dollar store type cheap. It is very prone to breaking under even the most modest levels of use.

It has no features, not even an alarm function. The are only two things that can be done with it. Set the time and display the time. ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - GREAT game, HORRIBLE edition... fellow fanboys, you've been HAD
The game is everything I hoped it would be, a 5 out of 5 from a guy that loved Fallout 1 and 2(Wasteland for that matter) and wasn't so big on Oblivion. It's a bit moody in terms of crashes, but the game saves so often for you, even if you forget to save and crash, you won't have lost much progress. After the patch a few days ago, I haven't had one crash.

The Bobblehead is perfectly good. Paint isn't great, but overall decent workmanship.

The lunchbox workmanship is a little ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The game is great, the clock is junk.
The game is great. It is in DESPERATE need of patching though so save often! Mine crashes out at least one to three times every 4-6 hours of play. Another issue you may have is certain important NPC's will randomly die. I've seen this twice so far. Other than that the game is GREAT.

In this edition, the bobblehead, book and lunchbox are all nice but the "clock" is a piece of junk. Don't expect this thing to work at all. Expect this thing to just sit somewhere in your house looking nifty. It ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - The game is awesome, the clock is crap.
If you want this game, do yourself a favor and either just get the regular edition, or the collector edition if you want the bobblehead (which is really cool, btw) If you DO break down and get the Survival Edition, be prepared to own a clock that will DIE less than 2 weeks after you get it. It's NOT WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY!!! This is my first and LAST "Amazon Exclusive" collector thing. Thanks Amazon!

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Pipboy clock already broken - don't waste your money
Much like everyone else, my complaint is about the clock. Yes, the injection molded plasic is cheap, and the design is kind of lousy, but I was more or less OK with it. Within a week, the clock display died. Tried switching batteries, and its still dead. It's not exactly dead, but its lost about 98% of its glow. Presumably its still working, but you can only make out a faint light in a dark room, making it useless.

Went to my friend's place, and his had died already as well. Not only are the ... Read More
