Editorial Review:
Product Description: Evangelicals stand divided in their view of women in the church.
On one side stand complementarians, arguing the full worth of women but assigning them to differing roles. On the other side stand egalitarians, arguing that the full worth of women demands their equal treatment and access to leadership roles. Is there a way to mend the breach and build consensus?
Sarah Sumner thinks there is. Avoiding the pitfalls of both radical feminism and reactionary conservatism, she traces a new path through the issues--biblical, theological, psychological and practical--to establish and affirm common ground. Arguing that men and women are both equal and distinct, Sumner encourages us to find ways to honor and benefit from the leadership gifts of both. Men and Women in the Church is a book for all who want a fresh and hope-filled look at a persistent problem.

Dr. Sarah Sumner intelligently disects the egalitarian vs. complementarian debate and offers another option. She is a conservatively-trained theologian, having done her Ph.D. at Trinity Divinity School with the likes of Dr. Wayne Grudem (though she disproves and disagrees with him on many points). She is currently a Professor of Ministry and Theology at Azusa Pacific University. Dr. Sumner never fails to be both humble and respectful, seeking the TRUTH in all that she writes. Her hermeneutic is excellent ... Read More

About to embark in to marriage and to the mission field, I found myself knee deep in the question of women preaching and teaching. Having done some apologetic study and now completing my M.Div, I appreciate the solid biblically based logic Dr. Sumner consistently applied throughout this book.
Most of all, I am thankful that I did not have to go down the road she details regarding a brother in the Lord who crushed his wife believing she had no right to have a ministry or right to teach men. Thank ... Read More

This book is truly like none I have ever seen before. It is neither complimentarian nor egalitarian, but it offers more definitive answers than either position has about certain gender issues. I admit I was frusterated when first coming across this book's reviews; they managed to say a lot about the book without clarifying Sumner's exact stance on certain matters! Only now do I see why; Sumner refuses to absolutely side with either complimentarians or egalitarians and in fact claims to disagree with both about ... Read More

The simplest way for me to review this book is to excerpt a footnote about it from a book which I am writing (a VERY long footnote, but since I haven't even completed the first draft of my book, I have time to hone it :-)). I trust this will be helpful to some despite the decontextualization:
"I once found myself hunched over my Bible begging God to show me His truth about gender roles and marital dynamics no matter what the personal repercussions. I asked Him to show me His grand plan for submission ... Read More

This is a work every living believer should read.
I don't say that lightly. In fact, I only read it out of obligation since the author attends my church. The subject didn't interest me or impact me that much, coming out of a secular home without many of the prejudices and traditions found in Christian homes. I have never been offended at the thought of a woman leading or teaching in the church. The best person for the job as they say. So I also thought I was already "there" with the author as far as her ... Read More
