Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Unchecked urbanization has begun to eclipse the North Carolina countryside. As farms give way to shoddy mansions, farmers struggle to slow the rampant growth. In the shadows, corrupt county commissioners use their political leverage to make profitable deals with new developers. A murder will pull Judge Deborah Knott and Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Bryant into the middle of this bitter dispute and force them to confront some dark realities.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Death's Half Acre

I have read all Margaret Maron's books that feature Deborah Knott. I have enjoyed all of them. Each one
is better than the last. I recommend her books to any one who asks for a book recommendation.
I am already waiting for the next book.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - I've read the entire series. This one was pretty weak.
I think Maron has hit a bare patch in the Deborah Knott series. The last couple weren't that great, and this one was lackluster. I share Maron (and Deborah's) political sensibilities, but this one seemed dominated more by abstract ideas (development and loss of the Carolina countryside) than by character. I didn't care about ANY of the MANY plotlines, and I figured out the key plot point long before the end.

To my mind, this isn't the first time Maron has found the cupboard bare. ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Boot legging and black mail equal a southern mystery delight!

Two deaths in rural Colleton County, North Carolina, put everyone on edge -- including protagonist Judge Deborah Knott and her new husband, Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Bryant. Most recently, beautiful county commission chairman Candace Bradshaw is found dead in her home with a suicide note, saying she killed herself, overwhelmed with her guilt over taking kickbacks from the developers descending upon the county and its rich land. A few ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - EXCELLENT BOOK
AGAIN, MRS. MARON DOES A GREAT JOB OF KEEPING YOUR INTEREST THROUGH OUT THE BOOK. SHE MAKES YOU FEEL THAT YOU KNOW THE CHARACTERS AND ARE A FRIEND AND NEIGHBOR FOR A SHORT TIME. ENJOY

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Mediocre effort, not her usual flare or style.
I didn't care for this book nearly as much as the previous five or so in the Deborah Knott series. Just didn't have enough energy or enough tension or something like that, the storyline just fell flat. Also, I didn't care for the historical tidbit revealed about Deborah, saddened me a bit to learn that about her. I much preferred Winter's Child, High Country Fall (my favorite of all!), Rituals of the Season.
