Editorial Review:
Product Description:
By the Kate Greenaway Medalist Deep in the woods in an old white cabin, three friends make their pumpkin soup the same way every day. The Cat slices up the pumpkin, the Squirrel stirs in the water, and the Duck tips in just enough salt. But one day the Duck wants to stir instead, and then there is a horrible squabble, and he leaves the cabin in a huff. It isn't long before the Cat and the Squirrel start to worry about him and begin a search for their friend. Rendered in pictures richly evoking autumn, Helen Cooper's delightful story will resonate for an child who has known the difficulties that come with friendship. Included at the end is a recipe for delicious pumpkin soup.

This is a very sweet story about a group of friends who live together happily and cooperate very well together until one of them becomes dissatisfied with "the rules" or habits that become a ritual part of their lives. Duck wants to stir the soup! What to do! A good story on how people grow up and begin trying new things and families have to learn to adapt to the new found roles and skills of their members.

This book does have quiet a few words, and at first that made me think it may not keep the interest of my preschool class. But I was wrong. They absolutely love this book. It is a great book that demonstrates friendship and teamwork. Do not hesitate to buy. It is well worth it. It has a great message that would be wonderful for a child of any age. Even adults who get stuck in a rut. Enjoy!

I did not know the extent to which my daughter would come to love this book when I purchased it. Had I known, I would have found a hardcover edition. Let me just say, this is the first book that my almost 4 year old memorized (word for word). This is the first book that my 9 year old will go to when he wants to read to her (e.g. he wants to read it and needs an excuse).
It is a warm tale about friendship, sharing, and overcoming conflict/compromise. It handles conflict naturally (e.g. ... Read More

I like how the characters finally work together to create harmony. It's a great, simple lesson. The illustrations are very nice and I love the feel of the book. Great choice for the 4-8 set!

I read this book to my elementary and special education students last week and I included some music from Ireland which included bagpipes and violin. I also added a country banjo song, too.
It was great fun! It's a wonderful story for all!
