Editorial Review:

Description:
Tarzan: the very name evokes jungle adventure. The Lord of the Apes could be counted on to swing through the trees to aid the helpless, battle beasts of the wild and thwart evil intruders in his tropical paradise. Naturally, anyone in the role of Tarzan has to have a manly physique, and so a succession of athletes played Tarzan in the movies. Johnny Weissmuller is the most famous, but there were others who gave Tarzan's jungle call in other films. Here is a collection of five Tarzan feature films starring four of the mightiest movie Tarzans.

Before he played Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, swimming champion Buster Crabbe donned the loincloth of Tarzan in 1933 for TARZAN THE FEARLESS.

1936 Olympic decathlon champion Glenn Morris played the title role in TARZAN'S REVENGE, in his only starring role in Hollywood.

Herman Brix, silver medalist shot-putter in the 1928 Olympics, won the Tarzan role in a 1935 serial. This serial was re-cut to become two features, THE NEW ADVENTURES OF TARZAN and its sequel, TARZAN AND THE GREEN GODDESS. Brix later changed his name to Bruce Bennett and appeared in many other serials and adventure movies.

Former Army drill instructor, fireman and lifeguard Gordon Scott had a varied life before being cast as the jungle lord in a series of Tarzan movies, including TARZAN AND THE TRAPPERS, made in 1958. He went on to appear in a number of sword and sandal muscleman movies.

As a bonus there is the comedy short KID'IN AFRICA, starring Shirley Temple as the damsel in distress being rescued by the peewee Tarzan-like hero. Plus much, much more!

The perfect collection for any fan of the Lord of the Apes!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Slick packaging of public domain films
These films are all old black-and-white Tarzan films which have come into the public domain which means that anyone can copy and sell them.

This is about the nicest packaging I've seen of these great old flicks but, as others have pointed out, you can get the same films of equal print quality in a two-disc set at a much cheaper price. Here is the deal that will get you the same set of films:

AMC: Tarzan of the Apes: Collection

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - An Expensive Collection of Tarzan Movies
There are several sets of Tarzan DVD's available. Unfortunately, many share the same movies.

The Johnny Weismuller set, (The Tarzan Collection Starring Johnny Weissmuller), with six movies on 4 discs contains the best movies. The DVD picture and sound quality are good for movies that are over 60 years old.

The purpose of my review is to compare this set, (Tarzan: King of the Jungle), with a comparable set, (Tarzan 5 Movies on 2 Discs). Both sets contain the following movies ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Off-brand Ape Men
The TARZAN, KING OF THE JUNGLE set is probably of lasting interest only to Tarzan completists, but it does nicely complement THE TARZAN COLLECTION. The latter comprises Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's six Johnny Weissmuller/Maureen O'Sullivan pairings -- the name-brand Ape-Man flicks of the 1930s; KING OF THE JUNGLE showcases the same decade's Brand X Tarzans, Buster Crabbe, Bruce Bennett, and Glenn Morris, as well as one of Weissmuller's successors, Gordon Scott.
