Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Tom Selleck gives a restrained yet powerful performance as General Dwight D. Eisenhower in Ike: Countdown to D-Day. This made-for-cable feature focuses on the solemn, brilliant but plain-speaking Ike as he fine-tunes, over 90 days, tactical and political concerns involved with the Allies' imminent D-Day invasion of Normandy, i.e., America and Britain's long-awaited joint assault against Nazi-occupied Europe. A strong cast--James Remar as General Omar Bradley, Timothy Bottoms as Ike's assistant, Walter Bedell "Beetle" Smith--anchors the film's mesmerizing, blow-by-blow account of Eisenhower's leadership under the shadow of many uncertainties (predicting the weather for D-Day becomes a suspenseful refrain) and pressure from conflicting egos (Montgomery, DeGaulle, Patton). Ian Mune is a delight as a wary, darkly bemused Churchill, who encourages Ike's strategy of supreme leadership and low-key diplomacy. The script by Lionel Chetwynd (DC 9/11: Time of Crisis) captures the unbearable tension of commencing the invasion--and awaiting the results. --Tom Keogh

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - When Character Was King"
I just watched Ike - Countown to D -Day. I was very impressed with Tom Sellack's portrayal of The Great Eisenhower. I am a huge admirer of Eisenhower and really thought that Tom Sellack was able to bring accross so beautifully Ike's character & humanity. Eisenhower represents, something that is so lost in today's world, character & strength. I recently became interested in Eisenhower, and read several books on him, as well as speaches he wrote. This man was an incredible human being and Tom ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - "I Like Ike!"
Ike: Countdown to D-Day is a well-acted, well-written WWII film, that chronicles the 90 days prior to the D-Day invasion. Absent are the bloody battle scenes from Saving Private Ryan and Flags of Our Fathers, replaced by a blow-by-blow account of the planning and organizing that went into Operation Overlord. Tom Selleck delivers a masterful performance as Eisenhower, clearly showing the stress and strain that came with such a huge undertaking. The responsibility of Supreme Commander seems to come ... Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Slow and Complicated - not a good film for those who aren't very familiar with the historical background of this film.
I'm not a history buff, but I enjoy learning about historical events. I loved the movie "Thirteen Days," so I looked to see what other films Amazon recommended under this genre. I purchased "IKE" because of the great reviews. I couldn't finish watching the film because from the start, I had a difficult time understanding what the characters were talking about - I felt like I was thrown into the middle of heavy strategic planning and intense relationships among historical characters. It took me a while ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - IKE
One of the best performances of Tom Selleck in his career. He brings Ike down from the hero's heights and shows an ordinary man forced to make some of the most earth shaking decisions in history. The weight of can the allies pull off a French invasion rested on this strong American's shoulders. We see the complex group of egotist that made up the allies generals and world leaders who Ike had to cope with in order to defeat Hitler and get the allies back onto European soil. Selleck's performance is strong, ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Eisenhauer would be proud.....
Told from the point of view of Ike, which becomes obvious at the end. The cast of this piece of history retold, is absolutely a wonderful and compelling portrait of the men whose responsibility was the taking back of europe from the clutches of a madman. And the one man whose task it was to make sure that it happened....IKE! Tom Selleck as General Dwight David Eisenhauer, Supreme Commander, Allied Expeditionary Forces, European Theatre of Operations...does an outstanding job of making this story come alive. ...
