Long out of the public eye, Cher's 1969 feature Chastity offers plenty of camp pleasure for curious cult movie viewers. Written and produced (and directed, as some have suggested) by husband Sonny Bono, Cher stars as the title character, a sullen drifter escaping her troubled past who finds possible happiness in the arms of a nice-guy parking attendant (Stephen Whittaker). Emotional turmoil puts her back on the road, and once in Mexico, Chastity becomes the plaything of a cold-hearted madam (Barbara London). Sonny's script is muddled and often downbeat, but Cher's performance isn't as bad as some wags have said, and the film is escapist enjoyment for fans of '60s youthquake pictures and camp delights. MGM's DVD is widescreen; the print has some fleeting nudity and suggestive scenes, which may indicate that this is the "M" rated version rather than the theatrical R or heavily edited TV versions. Trivia note: Sonny and Cher's daughter Chastity was conceived during the making of this film. --Paul Gaita

i wanted so bad to see this movie when it opened in dallas texas where i was living when it opened in 1969. however it was rated R at the time and i was only 16. in those days they carded kids at theaters so i never got to see it. as the years went by i tried time and again to see it. never could find it on the shelves of video stores. i had heard cher and sonny both talk about how bad this movie was. i have read reviews from people who saw it and called it bad. i am here to say.. it ain't so bad. ... I got this DVD yesterday and i absolutely love this movie.Cher is so young and she did a great job for her first dramatic role.Chastity is very wise with the way she makes money for herself.In one scene chastity pretends that her father owns a gas station and she fills up somebodys tank and checks the car and she charges 5 dollars and runs off with it. she is always off running away because of something and you don't know what it is until the end when she's hearing her mom and dad's voice in her head ... She was born in a wagon of a travelin' show, her mama used to dance for the money they'd throw... Yes, it's pre-nose-job Cher in her absolutely wretched dramatic debut, as a sullen and surly hitchhiking runaway with a heart of pressed tin. This is Cher's PURPLE RAIN - sort of a semibiography that lets Cher play herself struggling through some hard times. She plays the lead character who runs the whole movie from one situation to the next until we finally get to see what she is running from in a pretty effective final breakdown sequence. It was a flop on its release, and it's still pretty much a midnight worthy cult film without too much you could call great cinema. I have seen this film lots of times on Showtime.I've read where Sonny Bono copped out on his own screenplay.Yet he put everything about Cher or what she had experienced into the film.It may not be at its very best,but yet it showcases Cher as to what was to come.
